Meet Jojo Aguilar, Art Director of Trese

img_9129Jojo Aguilar is a Production Designer, Art Director, and Concept Designer who has worked in the entertainment industry for close to 30 years. He started right out of high school at Hana- Barbera at 1988 as a character designer. Feeling he needed more formal education, he left to the Philippines to study Commercial Arts at the University of Santo Tomas.

He returned to animation in 1997 where he worked as a BG artist at Sony. Since then he has worked steadily for many studios including Disney, Warner Bros, Nickelodeon, Marvel, and Fox to name a few. He has worked as a supervisor in Character, Background, and Prop design.

His works include dozens of 2d shows and features and 17 cg animated projects, video games, and theme park design where he won a TEA award for an attraction he art directed. He has also taught concept design at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena.

On many projects, he has been the first one hired to create “Look of Picture.” Some of these include Tron Uprising and Green Eggs and Ham. His latest projects have been visual development for the Ugly Dolls feature for Reel FX, Art Directing at Dreamworks for the Camp Cretaceous series for Netflix and Art Direction on Trese, a horror action adventure for Netflix. He is currently Production Designing on 2 animated projects for Netflix.

He currently lives in Santa Monica and works as Creative Director for Lex & Otis, LLC in Glendale, California.

  • Hand-Brewed nails it every time with this smooth sipper. A rotating series, this evolving IPA has never failed us. Want to #EarnYourBrew? Hit up a hike on the nearby trails before stopping into this Chatsworth tasting room.

Casual Friday Hazy DIPA, 8.2%, Lincoln Beer Company, Burbank

  • It’s OK to stray away from crisp lagers and dank IPA’s, if only just to try this 8.2% hazy double IPA fruit bomb from our friends in Burbank. Big fruit flavors and requisite haze. Flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts encouraged when consuming this beverage.

Cut and Dry Irish Stout, 4.8%, MacLeod Ale Brewing Co., Van Nuys

  • Undoubtedly a Brews With Masters favorite. Available in nitro cans, this liquid gold will quickly make you forget about…that one beer…with the black and gold…Forget it. Doesn’t matter. Drink Cut and Dry. Now.

Deez Nuts Brown Ale, 6.2%, Hand-Brewed Beer, Chatsworth

  • Boasting arguably the best name of the bunch, Deez Nuts delivers. Dubbed “a beer so nutty, it could only have been brewed by a couple of real squirrels,” this American brown ale is no joke. It’s a well-balanced brew that’s ideal for everyday sipping.

Grapefruits of Wrath IPA, 7.7%, San Fernando Brewing Co.

  • It’s exactly what it sounds like: Big grapefruit flavor that equates to big smiles from beer drinkers. A refreshing summer beer that packs a punch.

Jewel City Common, 5.8%, Brewyard Beer Company, Glendale

  • Glendale’s first microbrewery tipped its cap to city of Glendale by sharing a name. Also known as a steam beer, this light amber has hints of toast and caramel maltiness with light hop bitterness.

The Lucky Penny Extra Special/Strong Bitter, 6%, MacLeod Ale Brewing Co., Van Nuys

  • The folks at MacLeod’s sure do know how to brew a beer true to the style. This is a malty, English style classic on cask. Go for the cask experience, stay for the Cut and Dry.

Matador Red Ale, American Amber 5.8%, 8one8 Brewing Canoga Park

  • Brewed by alumni, this red ale is an ode to the nearby Cal State Northridge. Citrus and floral tones are balanced by “seductive caramel notes and a soft chocolate finish.”

O’Melveny Red Ale, American Amber, 7.5%, San Fernando Brewing. Co.

  • Named after the sprawling park in the north valley, O’Melveny Red Ale is a malty amber that is complimented by a hint of sourdough. Perfect for a picnic in the park.

Smash Lager, 4.7%, Lincoln Beer Company, Burbank

  • This single hop and single malt pilot brew at Lincoln won’t last long. “A beer tasting experience,” Smash Lager has a malty foundation with light citrus notes.

Ube Wan IPA, 6%, Brewyard Beer Company, Glendale

  • Drawing from his Filipino heritage, head brewer Sherwin Antonio used purple yams with Motueka, Citra and Northern Brewer hops. While there’s a light ube finish, the purple hue of the beer coupled with the Star Wars inspired can art makes for an overall fun experience.

Valley Girl Blonde Ale, 5.6%, 8one8 Brewing, Canoga Park

  • A staple in the (818), it’s more than likely that you’ve already tried this beer, or at least seen it at your local liquor store. The epic label of the Wendy Peffercorn-esque blonde blowing a giant pink bubble—palm trees reflecting off the pink lenses on her white shades—is hard to miss. The beer is equally as great as the artwork. Be sure to grab a four-pack to go before heading home.

From Chef To Baker: Meet Cookies By Joe

07701f73-4e70-4d50-a8ed-59e809470e10Sometimes, you make plans and life has a way of putting you on a different path.  The origins of Cookies by Joe is a testament to that.

Joana Turcios, owner of Cookies by Joe, didn’t start baking cookies off the bat(ter). She went to culinary school with the hopes of becoming a chef but soon realized she loved baking and making people happy with cookies! Then the pandemic hit and she found the perfect opportunity to try her new venture.

“I was craving a cookie and there aren’t many (cookie) shops in the valley. So, I went back to my baking roots just to kill that craving. At that time, I was reading, You are a Badass At Making Money, so when the cookies I baked turned out great…the light bulb went off,” shares Joana about the origins of Cookies by Joe.

She used the aforementioned book as motivation and decided to sell cookies on Instagram. With San Fernando Valley need more food ventures, her cookies quickly became a hit!

“I did not think I was going to make it into a business until I realized how much I love baking cookies and being my own boss. My fiancé has been so supportive and is part of the marketing aspect of the business,” she adds.

What makes her cookies unique is the seasonal flavors and her baking technique. Her cookies are chewy on theimg_8872 outside while soft on the inside. You’ll always find a variety on her menu with some of the most popular flavors as main stays: Lemon Cookie, Brown Butter Toffee, and the infamous S’mores cookie. A couple of new flavors will be making its way to the menu: Strawberry Short Cake Cookie and Cookies and Cream—stay tuned for those!

With the task of growing her business and constantly finding opportunities to collaborate with people and business in the (818), you can find Joana in various pop-up locations from Café Aficionado to the her latest pop-up at the Café y Cultura at the Burbank Promenade last June 12th.  Catch her at Aroma Café in Studio City from 11am – 6pm this Saturday, June 19th.
