Behind the Business: Dan’s Super Subs

It’s a surprise to some that Dan’s Super Subs is not owned by someone named Dan. Instead, it is owned by the Halici brothers, Herman and Jack. In 1980, Herman bought the sandwich shop from a gentleman named Dan who sold it after being in business for a year. They kept the name for economical reasons, since they were still establishing their business.

“Dan gave us the name, but we gave it the soul,” reminisces Herman Halici during an interview with KTLA.

For over 40 years, Dan’s Super Subs is run and operated by the Halici family. Be it the brothers, their kids, or their grandkids, a family member is always present during the shop’s hours of operation. “Quality and community above all else” is Herman’s and Jack’s motto. And it shows in the pride and care they take in creating their sandwiches. They’ve been THE sandwich establishment on this side of San Fernando Valley, awarded as the “Best Alternative Deli” by KTLA for their L.A Street Pastrami and named “The Best Sub Shop in Los Angeles” by the L.A Times and Fox LA.

“I love doing this stuff and we keep on coming out with new sandwiches.  That’s our passion and that’s what we like to do,” shares Herman.

Every sub from their shop is steamed warm on rolls from Agostino’s Bakery in Ventura, CA. Nothing is ever microwaved. They take pride in making fresh, high quality subs with quality ingredients. Customers and community is at the heart of their business. They would never make a sub that they would not eat themselves. They’ve had customers who came in as kids and now bring their children in.

Dan’s Super Subs offers a huge variety of subs from Vegetarian Subs to Italian Subs to Classic Subs to their Specialty Subs which include their bestseller, the L.A. Street Pastrami, an amazing mix of lean pastrami, cheese, bacon, grilled onions, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, chopped pickles, jalapenos, and their spicy Baja sauce. My personal favorite: the Mama Mia, loaded with their homemade Italian avocado spread, capicolla, mortadella, cotto salami, dry salami, bologna, provolone, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, olives, mild peppers, onions, diced pickles, salt, black pepper, olive oil, vinegar, oregano, and grated parmesan. Now, that’s flavor country right there!

All subs come in regular (6″ inch) or jumbo (13″ inch”) sizes. Either one you choose is portioned generously. Be sure to come hungry! In addition, they also serve salads, chips, cole slaw, and potato salad. In recent years, they’ve been the site of the popular Dan’s Super Subs’ Mega Sandwich Eating Challenge, eating two large jumbo subs in an hour. The winner gets a shirt and their photo on the digital Wall of Fame. The current record holder consumed four jumbo subs in under 50 minutes.

Stop by and try one of their tasty subs. They won’t disappoint!
