Behind the Business: Flooky’s

Breakfast burritos all day, every day is one of the best things about this iconic establishment. That and having the same commitment to serving quality hotdogs for almost 60 years. Of course, we’re talking about the one and only Flooky’s in Woodland Hills.

Located in a strip mall on Victory and Variel, this family owned and operated business continues to honor their humble beginnings, serving fresh food, providing fast service, and at affordable prices. The first Flooky’s was opened in 1965 in Sherman Oaks by owner and hotdog maverick, Stan “Mr. Flooky” Hoffenberg. He brought his trademark Chicago hotdogs to the corner of Ventura Blvd. and Cedros Ave. With its signature exterior, yellow and black stripes, capped with an onion shaped dome rooftop and miniature golf course on the property, it quicky became a crowd favorite, especially after school. It was also a favorite birthday party venue for many.

The mini golf course was replaced by batting cages, one of the first in the area. This made the hotdog stand grow in popularity, attracting many of the Little Leagues and High School baseball teams during weekdays.

“My dad was a real solid businessman and born promoter.,” shared Stuart Hoffenberg during an interview. “The kids wanted to come to Flooky’s to eat great food, play pinball machines, and to work on their baseball hitting skills. WE covered all the bases so to speak. Flooky’s was an institution. So many people grew up with those hotdogs and many people relay their Flooky’s stories to me on Facebook.”

The Flooky’s franchise chain grew quickly in the San Fernando Valley, with the Sherman Oaks location holding a special place in Stan’s heart since it was the first of many. They even had stands open in Nevada for a time. The original Flooky’s location was shut down because the owners of the land wanted to sell the property but, at that time, new Flooky’s stands were opening up all over Southern California.

Today, the Woodland Hills location of Flooky’s is one, if not the only, location remaining in the San Fernando Valley. There was a location in on Canoga Blvd which, unfortunately, closed due to the pandemic.

In 2009, Stan Hoffenberg passed away at the age of 95, leaving a legacy of awesome hotdogs and great memories.

The current location of Flooky’s in Woodland Hills offers more deli options, burgers, and all-day breakfast. Sans the onion dome rooftop, they continue to carry the yellow and black stripes of the original hotdog stand. They’ve also expanded their hotdog menu to include options such as the Maxwell Dog, Tosino Dog, and Super Dog.

Swing by and have a hotdog or two if you’re in the area. They’re open for dine-in and take out. It’ll definitely be worth the trip!
